The 1958 FIFA World Cup will be the eleventh FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football championship contested by the men's national teams of FIFA. The tournament will be held in Switzerland for the first time.
With the format of being Europe and the Americas continuing, it was time for Europe turn and in a strange call of events, there was only one bid despite a proposal from Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom wanting to host the tournament but later dropping their bid. This left only the Swiss as they got the hosting rights unopposed on April 11, 1950.
The first matches in the qualifying period started in mid-1956 with the first matches being in the opening round of the North American qualification period with Guatemala, El Salvador and Barbados being the teams.
The tournament would see the debut of Canada while Egypt appeared in the World Cup for the first time since 1930.
