The 1956 Summer Olympics , officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1956. The 1956 Games were the first to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere and South America, as well as the first to be held outside Europe and North America.
Host city selection[]
Buenos Aires was selected as the host city over bids from Melbourne, Mexico City, Montreal and four American cities on 28 April 1949, at the 43rd IOC Session in Rome, Italy.
