The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the sixth FIFA World Cup since it started in 1906. It took place between the 13th July to the 3rd August and was the first tournament to be held in South America.
Netherlands took home their first World Cup title after defeating Argentina in the final by 2-0 and in the progress became the fifth nation to win a World Cup title.
Background[]
The host nation was selected on May 31, 1926, with Uruguay winning the vote. This though spark convertiseary from the outset with the British teams pulling out and sparked a football competition for the British Empire Games which happened in Canada only two days after the World Cup ended. Despite the protest from the British teams, the competition still went as planned with FIFA declaring that it will be rotating the World Cups between Europe and the Americas.
Bids[]
For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, there had to be a vote for the sixth World Cup with Uruguay and Italy putting a bid in for the 1930 edition. On May 31 1926, Uruguay won the vote by the closest margin possible by only 1 vote.
